Thanks to a gamble that paid off - a single tyre change - the Monegasque toppled the McLarens and captured the hearts of the Ferrari tifosi.
Mamma mia! Charles Leclerc won the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix on Sunday in his Ferrari, on the home turf of the legendary Italian team. It was the 16th round of the season out of 24, much to the delight of the tens of thousands of tifosi packed around the legendary Monza circuit.
The Monegasque, who started fourth, finished ahead of the two McLarens of Australian Oscar Piastri and Briton Lando Norris, with Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), the overall leader, only sixth.
‘This victory is just as good as the first’.
At the end of a very difficult weekend, at the wheel of an ‘impossible to drive’ RB20, Verstappen can nevertheless be satisfied with having limited the damage... and thank Leclerc for having beaten the McLarens.
