The current cathedral, built in 1875 in white stone from La Turbie, stands on the site of a 13th-century church dedicated to St. Nicholas, which houses the tombs of the former princes of Monaco. It is also the final resting place of Monaco's beloved Princess Grace. Of particular interest are the retable (about 1500) on the right side of the transept, painted by Louis Bréa from neighboring Nice, the Great Altar and the bishop's throne made of white Carrara marble.
Papal services take place at the most important religious festivals, such as the feast of Sainte Dévote (27 January) and the National Day (19 November).
On feast days and at religious music concerts you can hear the magnificent four-key organ, which was inaugurated in 1976.
From September to June "Les Petits Chanteurs de Monaco" and the singers of the Cathedral Choir School sing every Sunday at 10.00
