Andrey Rublev wins in Monte Carlo
The Russian won the 2023 tournament, after his 2021 final loss to Tsitsipas. He beat Holger Rune in three sets (5-7, 6-2, 7-5).
His third attempt proved to be the right one. Andrey Rublev, who was beaten in the final in Monte Carlo in 2021, as well as in Cincinnati the same year, has this time won a Masters 1000. The Russian, ranked number 6 in the world, dominated Holger Rune in three sets (5-7, 6-2, 7-5) at the end of an indecisive final. The 19-year-old Dane, ranked ninth in the world, will long regret this third set.
On two occasions, he had 5-1 balls in the last set. Rublev hung in there and managed to claw his way back into the match, before taking his opponent's serve at 5-5 after two missed smashes from the Dane, which had the effect of pissing him off.
A big hitter with a big character, Rune did not hesitate to play with the Monegasque public to add a little spice to this final, but the Russian, who was much more placid, was able to keep his composure in the important moments. Rublev succeeds the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, winner of the last two editions.
