We visited the revolutionary boat
Demystifying the ocean and making its exploration as exciting as the conquest of space in order to raise public awareness is the objective of the crew of the OceanXplorer.
It is an example of conversion. Built in 2010 in Turkey and fitted out as a support, monitoring and assistance vessel for oil platforms in the North Sea, the Volstad Surveyor was bought in 2018 by the international non-profit organisation, OceanX, set up by the American billionaire and philanthropist, Ray Dalio. One of the world's greatest fortunes, passionate about oceanography and delighted to have forged a strong partnership with the Prince Albert II Foundation.
As soon as it was transported to a shipyard in Rotterdam, the ship was renamed OceanXplorer and transformed into a scientific exploration and research vessel, capable of probing the ocean depths and transcribing the experience of its crew without filters thanks to a media lab that is unique in the world. A combination of technologies (virtual reality helmets, holograms, drones, etc.) will allow the general public to be immersed in the heart of scientific missions.
