The FIA is backtracking! Introduced in Monaco in 2025 with the hope of creating more exciting racing, the two-stop rule will not be reinstated in 2026.

On February 18, 2025, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) took advantage of the “F1 75 Live” ceremony, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Formula 1 World Championship in London, to announce a new rule specific to Monaco requiring two pit stops during the race.

On February 26, 2025, the World Motor Sport Council and the FIA officially approved this strategy “with the primary intention of improving the sporting spectacle.”

A Counterintuitive Rule

"Following recent discussions within the F1 Commission, a specific requirement for the Monaco Grand Prix has been approved, mandating the use of at least three sets of tires [changing all four tires simultaneously, ed.] during the race, with a minimum of two different tire compounds to be used if it is a dry race."

A rule that failed to produce results on the big day, with a meager number of overtakes during the race. The measure even led to a strategic neutralization of the race from the paddocks, with drivers adopting aligned strategies.
