Max Verstappen wins the 80th Monaco Grand Prix in masterly fashion
The Dutch ogre from the Red Bull team was imperious both in the dry and in the rain, making his mark on the Monaco race for the second time (after 2021) on Sunday. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Esteban Ocon (Alpine) joined him on the podium, while Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) had to make do with 6th place on home soil.
And in the end, it was Max Verstappen who won.
In Monaco on Sunday, nothing could stand in the way of the Formula 1 supremo's fantastic ride. Not even the sky, which was hoping to muddy the waters by opening its floodgates as the money-time approached.
Imperial, implacable, the flying Dutchman remained on his cloud from start to finish. All behind and he far ahead.
After an impeccable take-off from pole position, the N°1 Red Bull escaped irresistibly. The leader played his part flawlessly. He masterfully managed the degradation of his medium tyres for 56 laps! Until the start of the downpour that turned the track into an ice rink.
While others (Sainz, Russel) lost the pedals, "Super Max" remained in metronome mode and finished the job.
It was his 39th career victory, 4th this season and 2nd at the foot of the Rock (after 2021).
The best of the rest? Fernando Alonso! The veteran Spaniard, 2nd by almost half a minute (27''9), once again managed to get the most out of his Aston Martin to score some big points.
The top 3 was rounded off by Esteban Ocon's Alpine, which claimed its third podium and put the French team back on track.
Charles Leclerc, who was demoted 3 places on the grid (6th) for getting in the way of Lando Norris during qualifying, put the best Ferrari of the day in 6th place behind the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. A meagre haul for the home-grown driver, who will have to wait at least another year before enjoying the joy of a podium finish on home soil.
